I Serve Papers with Smart Glasses. Here's Why You Should Too.

Pulling out your phone at someone’s door is a problem.

You’re already in a tense situation. The person you’re serving may not know you’re coming. They may be hostile, evasive, or just startled. The moment you reach into your pocket and raise a phone toward them, you’ve changed the dynamic — now you look like you’re recording them, which can escalate things fast.

I started using Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses for GPS documentation on my serves, and I haven’t looked back. Here’s the full workflow and why I think it’s one of the better-kept secrets in this industry right now.


The Problem with Phones at the Door

Under AB 747 — California’s GPS documentation requirement taking effect January 1, 2027 — you need a geotagged photo on every service attempt, successful or not. The intent is solid: a verifiable, timestamped record of where you were and when.

Most people’s first instinct is to use their phone. And phones work. But phones have friction:

  • You have to unlock the device
  • Navigate to the camera or your documentation app
  • Raise it toward the subject or property
  • Hope they don’t react badly to someone pointing a camera at them

That last one matters more than people acknowledge. I’ve had serves go sideways because someone saw me pull out a camera. The perception is “I’m being recorded,” and that’s a trigger — especially in high-conflict cases.

And here’s the part that makes it worse: California’s AB 747 specifically requires the photo to be taken at the door where you serve the papers. Not your car. Not the street. The door. Which means the most confrontational moment of the serve is exactly when you need to be raising a camera.

Smart glasses solve this without compromise.


What Meta Ray-Bans Actually Do

The Meta Ray-Ban glasses have a built-in 12MP camera with a button on the frame. One press, and they take a photo — or you can use the hands-free voice command. The photo captures GPS coordinates via the companion app on your phone, along with a timestamp.

From the subject’s perspective, you’re just a person wearing glasses. There’s no raised phone. No camera lens pointed at them. No visual cue that anything is being documented.

You look like you knocked on a door. Because that’s what you did.

This matters for service of process in a specific way: the less threatening your presence feels, the better your odds of a clean, uncomplicated serve. Anything that reduces confrontational signals is a professional advantage.


My Workflow: From Serve to Signed Proof

Here’s exactly how I use the glasses in the field:

At the address:

  1. Glasses on before I get out of the vehicle
  2. One button press as I approach — photo taken with GPS and timestamp
  3. Attempt the serve as normal
  4. Second photo if needed (evasion, substituted service, posting)

The photos sync automatically to the Meta View app on my phone. They contain embedded GPS coordinates and timestamps in the EXIF metadata — exactly what AB 747 requires.

Back at the office (or in the car): I upload the photos to my process serving app, which reads the GPS and timestamp from the photo metadata and prints them as visible text directly on the image — coordinates, date, time, and address. The final output is a properly formatted GPS photo ready to attach to a proof of service.

The key thing to understand: you’re taking the photo with the glasses instead of through the app. The GPS data is already embedded by the time you upload. Any app that accepts photo uploads and processes GPS metadata will work — including ServeManager, ServeReferee, and others. You’re not locked into one platform.

That’s it. The whole process adds maybe fifteen seconds to a serve.


Why This Already Meets AB 747

AB 747 doesn’t care what device you use. It cares that the resulting photo has GPS coordinates and a timestamp embedded in the file. Meta Ray-Ban photos meet that standard out of the box — the GPS data comes through the Meta View app via your phone’s location services.

A few things to verify when you’re setting this up:

  • Location permissions: This is the most important setting to get right. In your phone’s location settings for the Meta View app, set it to “Always” — not “While Using the App.” If it’s set to “While Using,” the GPS won’t embed in photos unless the Meta View app is open and active on your screen at the time you take the shot. With “Always” enabled, you can take the phone out of your pocket, walk to the door, and press the button — GPS embeds automatically without you touching your phone.
  • Photo resolution: The 12MP camera produces files fully compatible with standard EXIF metadata tools. Check one early using a viewer like Jeffrey’s Exif Viewer to confirm coordinates are embedding.
  • Storage and backup: Like any GPS photo workflow, back these up immediately. I use iCloud and a local folder. Never lose documentation to a dead phone battery.

The Angle Nobody’s Talking About

Most AB 747 coverage focuses on what device or app to buy. That’s the wrong frame.

The real question is: what workflow makes GPS documentation automatic, reliable, and low-friction enough that you actually do it on every single attempt without thinking about it?

Phones require a decision point. Every time you reach for your phone, there’s a moment where you might forget, rush it, or skip it because the situation is awkward. That’s how you end up with missing documentation.

The glasses remove the decision point. They’re already on. One button. Done.

I’ve been running this workflow for several months. My documentation is cleaner, my serves are calmer, and I’m not thinking about AB 747 compliance anymore because it’s built into how I work.


Gear and Setup

Hardware: Meta Ray-Bans come in multiple frame styles — standard, Wayfarer, and others. I wear the Meta Blazer with prescription transition lenses, which means I can wear them in the car, approaching the door, and inside if needed. Prescription and transition options are available through Ray-Ban directly. If you wear glasses anyway, this is the obvious choice.

App: Meta View (free, iOS and Android). Handles photo sync, GPS capture, and basic organization.

Documentation processing: I use ServeReferee (my own app) to print GPS data visibly onto photos and attach them to jobs. Other options exist — GPS Map Camera and Timestamp Camera Pro can also burn coordinates onto images, though they require a different capture workflow.

Cost: Meta Ray-Bans run around $299 depending on the configuration. For a tool you’ll use on every single serve, the ROI is measured in peace of mind and cleaner documentation — not a hard call.


What Happens When It Goes Sideways

Last week I had a serve turn ugly.

The person answered the door, realized what was happening, and started escalating. Voice raised, posture shifting — the kind of moment where you’re calculating your next move fast.

I switched the glasses to video and told him I was recording.

The situation didn’t disappear, but it changed. He knew there was a record. Whatever he was thinking about doing next, he was now doing it on camera.

In the end it was about a minute of footage. Tense, but nothing that required police. And when it was over, I had video documentation of the entire interaction — which means any claim he might make about what happened has to contend with what actually happened.

Here’s what I want you to notice: I didn’t reach for my phone. I didn’t break eye contact to unlock a screen or navigate to a camera app. The glasses were already on. One button, and the record was rolling.

That’s not a small thing when someone is advancing on you and your hands need to be free.

Body cameras have been standard in law enforcement for exactly this reason — continuous, hands-free documentation protects officers and subjects alike. Process servers don’t have that standard yet. But the tool exists right now, it costs $299, and it sits on your face.

Use it before you need it.


Is This Right for Every Process Server?

Probably not for every situation. If you’re doing courthouse research or skip tracing, the glasses don’t add much. If you work primarily in rural areas with minimal confrontation risk, a phone workflow may be perfectly sufficient.

But if you’re doing high-volume residential service, working contested matters, or serving people who are actively evading — this is worth serious consideration.

The worst thing that happens if you try it: you have a backup documentation method. The best thing: you never have to think about AB 747 compliance again because your workflow handles it automatically.
